Key takeaways

  • Spain lead the roll of honour with four titles, one ahead of Germany.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo holds the big player records: 14 goals, 30 matches and six tournaments.
  • Euro 2024 set new marks: Spain’s seven wins out of seven, their 15 goals and Lamine Yamal’s goal at 16.
  • Three finals were decided in ways you can no longer see: a coin toss in the semis, a replay and golden goals.

How to use this Euro quiz

In teams, score one point for the easy round, two for the medium round and three for the hard round. “Germany” includes West Germany unless the question says otherwise, and Euro 2020 means the tournament played in summer 2021.

Euro stories worth knowing

A few tournaments come up in almost every Euros quiz, so it pays to know them in some detail.

1968: a coin toss and a replay

Italy and the Soviet Union drew 0-0 in their semi-final in Naples, and with no penalty shoot-outs yet, a coin toss sent Italy through. The final against Yugoslavia finished 1-1, so it was replayed two days later, and Italy won 2-0.

1976: the Panenka

Czechoslovakia and West Germany drew 2-2 in Belgrade, and the final went to the first shoot-out in the tournament’s history. Antonín Panenka won it with a soft chip down the middle, and every penalty taken that way since carries his name.

1992: Denmark from the beach

Denmark had not qualified. When Yugoslavia were excluded ten days before the tournament, the Danes were called in, beat the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-final and then Germany 2-0 in the final in Gothenburg.

2004: Greece’s shock

Greece, who had never won a match at a major tournament before, beat hosts Portugal in the opening game and again in the final, 1-0 in Lisbon. Angelos Charisteas headed the winner.

2024: Spain’s perfect run

Spain won all seven of their matches, scored 15 goals, a record for one team at a single Euros, and beat England 2-1 in Berlin. Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the final, Cole Palmer equalised for England in between, and the title took Spain to four, one more than Germany.
