La Liga seasons worth knowing
2011-12 and 2012-13: two 100-point teams
José Mourinho’s Real Madrid became the first La Liga side to reach 100 points in 2011-12, scoring 121 goals along the way. The next season Barcelona, coached by Tito Vilanova, matched the 100 points. Nobody has topped it since.

The title came down to the last game: Barcelona against Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona needing a win. Alexis Sánchez put them ahead, Diego Godín headed the equaliser, and Atlético won their first league title in 18 years. It was the first title for a club other than Real Madrid or Barcelona since Valencia in 2003-04, and Simeone’s side won again in 2020-21.

Super Depor, coached by Javier Irureta, won the only title in the club’s history, the start of a period in which they also reached a Champions League semi-final in 2004.

Barcelona won the title in Hansi Flick’s first year, their 28th, while Kylian Mbappé scored 31 goals in his first La Liga season to win the Pichichi for Real Madrid, four ahead of Robert Lewandowski.
